mom's here!
Mom's here! She arrived yesterday afternoon and we've been having fun, running around, catching up. Yesterday when she got in we went to lunch then by chance ran into my friend Christie and her ma at Sur La Table. Who knew? We ran around Kirkland a bit, then later picked up Nathan from class and went out for Chinese food. Today we had lunch in Redmond and did a little shopping/moseying through Target (because mom's are willing to do that kind of thing). Tonight we went to see The Reader (for which Kate Winslet WON the Oscar! Yes Kate!) Not sure yet what we'll do tomorrow, but we'll pick up Dad later tomorrow night when he flies up from San Francisco. :D

Pup Wednesday
As promised, the weekly:
First spotted on white&wander
Who can resist those smooshy mugs?
I like to imagine someone pushed their long noses back like an accordion,
very tenderly of course.
I also like to think that one of them is not real at all
and is simply a materialized representation of some intimate part of
the real dog's psyche. You choose.

Lookie There!
On another window shopping spree.
A wee roundup of things I'm liking right now.
These sweet kicks are on sale for $12 at urbanoutfitters. They're the color of a raspberry popsicle! I look at these and think, Oh Spring, I'll never take you for granted again!
This is the perfectly optimistic shoe.
I thought I had safely cornered my opinion of the translucent fabric look to an ice capades-only category, but then this dress came along.
Why do I love this?? Maybe because the girl is so skinny that the skin-colored mesh still drapes from her and defeats its usual purpose. I dunno, but I like it.
I also like this print of colorful stumps by Ashley Goldberg at littlepaperplanes. This site has so much more going on lately and lots of nice prints! My old favorite, the illustration of the funny locker room girls, is now gone. I forgot the illustrator's name, so it may be lost forever. :(
Also, a lovely Andrew Bird poster from jenskelley on etsy.
This one goes out to you, Tay...going behind my back to see Andrew again, you jerk.
juskiddin. have fun.

Happy Valentine's Day!
Oh Happy Day!
I know a lot of people have issues with Valentine's Day as a holiday and think it's a corporate scam or that it's unfair to single people. But I kind of like it! I like a day when everyone's thinking about LOVE. Not just romantically either, but love of all kinds. It's a day that we should all be nice to each other and think sweet thoughts. That's what I think. :)
Once in a while I like to curl up on the couch and watch a very lovey movie. I recommend this especially if you are spending Valentine's Day alone. Because perhaps all that is better than love, is being in love with love.

The New Wednesday Weekly
Apologies for my lack of posts lately...I've mostly had this Festival on my mind, which is where my efforts have been. Years ago I volunteered for the Humane Society back home, and it feels good to be involved with this kind of thing again. Anyone that knew me even slightly as kid knows I was flaming crazy NUTS about dogs (and horses). My dream careers skipped around from animal rights activist to jungle-rescue-vet to horse rancher. But since my interest was not so much in science, more omg-animals-are-so-cute, that all slipped away later.
Still, nothing's better for melting your heart or having a laugh than a cute goofy animal, which is why I'm going to do a cute animal post of the week (and then I don't have to save them to a folder!) Wednesdays are usually a mixed bag, so why not have a little sweetie to make the week lighter? To inaugurate this new weekly ritual, I bring you:

Sinbad was adopted by the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Campbell in 1938 and made a true sailor, enlistment papers, uniform, individual bunk and all. He served with the Campbell for 11 years. LIFE Magazine reported: "An Old Sea Dog Has Favorite Bars and Plenty of Girls in Every Port."
Sinbad retires from the service

Way to go, Sinbad. You're top dog.

Furry Friends Festival
This January over 600 neglected dogs in Snohomish and Skagit Counties (just above Seattle) were seized from kennels and puppy mills. An astonishing number of them are pregnant, and many are sick and need immediate medical help. Several area shelters have taken them in for care while charges are brought against those formerly profiting from these dogs. The cost to provide their basic needs is overwhelming.
But not all is so bad--these dogs are now out of harm's way, and the story is about to get better!
In response to these sad events, I am pleased to announce the Furry Friends Festival, a benefit for the dogs and shelters affected by these raids. A large group of volunteers has come forward to organize a day of fun for the community, which includes live music, an arts and crafts fair, live and silent auctions, children's activities and entertainers, dog parades, and more! There will be a catered dinner that evening followed by a live auction. The event takes place Saturday, February 21, at the Holiday Inn Downtown Everett.
Wish us luck, dear readers! :)
